Wine Education
Course Overview
This highly-acclaimed wine course is definitely the place to start,
but it is also a stimulating eye-opener for people who have been haphazardly
dabbling in wine consumption for years. Basically this class is about
YOU: your taste thresholds; your attitudes and preferences, your social
behavior. The lectures and demonstrations (with slides and a whole
notebook of background materials) reveal how wines are different from
each other, AND how each individual reacts differently to the same
wine. For detailed class information, see Wine Tasting Fundamentals,
and read testimonials
for Bruce Cass, the wine instructor.
Each class session in the Fundamentals course will feature a 30- to 40-minute lecture (with visuals) including plenty of time for questions. Then there will be a structured tasting of 15 wines in a side-by-side format to make all the points about taste thresholds, personal preferences, and style vs. quality abundantly clear. Glassware, bread and cheese are all provided. Each session builds on the previous one to eventually assemble a complete and satisfying body of knowledge.
At the end of the three sessions everyone will have found new confidence in their own aesthetic opinions, as well as having discovered a healthy list of vinous adventures to pursue as future ‘homework.’
Wine
Class Instructor Bruce Cass
Bruce Cass taught Wine Appreciation classes on the Stanford University campus for fifteen years. He helped found the Society of Wine Educators. His books have won both the James Beard Award and Wine Book of the Year from the Intl. Assoc. of Culinary Professionals. Read more about wine teacher Bruce Cass.
Bruce is an energetic, talented speaker. He is also thoroughly objective ~ he does not own any wine inventory for sale. If you want to get a sense of Bruce’s style as an instructor, take a look at some wine articles he’s written.
Bruce even shares his often requested personal wine gift recommendations with students and subscribers to his monthly email newsletter that includes updates and notification about future classes.
Wine Course Weekender Concept
Most wine courses meet one night per week for several weeks (say three successive Wednesdays). Obviously that schedule is a hardship for visitors traveling to San Francisco to enjoy only a brief stay. By offering a complete wine course over a single weekend, Kimpton and the Bruce Cass Wine Lab seek to make this great educational opportunity available to a much wider audience. Kimpton’s discerning clientele certainly are good candidates. The beauty of the Weekender schedule is that time in class, while extremely sociable and entertaining, does not measurably distract from the chance to be a full-on tourist in America’s most romantic city. Class is over early enough on Friday evening to go out for dinner; so Bruce put together a list of 50 San Francisco Restaurants for Wine Lovers. Class is over even earlier on Saturday evening in case you want to get theater tickets. Or there is always our choice of special Wine Bar Walking Tours. The day Saturday is completely free for golf, sight-seeing, shopping, museums, and other things to do in San Francisco. Anything your heart desires.
If you have a chance to stay longer in the Bay Area, or just want to learn about California wines, the Wine Info section of BruceCassWineLab.com includes recommended Wine Country Tours, Food and Wine Pairings, or California Vintage Reports.
One-Time
Only 'Weekender Wine Class' Introductory Pricing (22 Couples Only)
Bruce Cass Wine Lab normally charges $229 per person when offering Fundamentals in San Francisco. The Wines alone for this course would cost $3,600 (if you could find them) in a retail store. The Harbor Court normally charges $170 plus tax each night for a room. Hence rack rate pricing for this Fine Wine Weekender Package should be $850 per couple.
The reason we are offering the Fine Wine Weekender Package this first time at $695 per couple is to encourage early registration.
